Formado em 1964 pelos irmãos “Robert Bell (conhecido como Kool)” e "Ronald Bell Khalis Bayyan" e mais cinco amigos do ensino médio.
Lançaram o álbum de estreia denominado “Kool & The Gang” em 1969. Aos poucos foram deixando de lado o “Jazz”, para assumir uma característica mais “Funk” e “R&B”, a banda já estava conhecida até que em 1973 lançam o disco “Wild and Peaceful” que trazia os sucessos “Jungle Boogie” e “Hollywood Swinging”, no ano seguinte veio “Light Of Worlds” até que em 1975 eles lançam o álbum “Spirit Of The Boogie” que é ate hoje o disco mais aclamado pela critica e pelos fãs. Em 1976 lançaram o disco “Open Sesame” e a faixa título do disco fez parte do trilha sonora do filme “Saturday Night Fever”.
Em 1978 o vocalista “James JT Taylor” juntou-se a banda que em 1979 com a produção do Brasileiro “Eumir Deodato” lançam o disco “Ladies Night” e no ano seguinte, “Celebrate” que ate hoje é o álbum que mais vendeu em toda a carreira da banda, “Celebrate” traz os “Hits” “Celebration” e “Love Festival”.
A banda continuou lançando discos e produzindo “Hits” no anos 80 como “Get Down On It”, “Joanna” , “Fresh”, “Misled”, “Cherish” “Take My Heart”, “Big Fun”, “Victory” e outros. Até que em 1987 “James JT Taylor” sai da banda e o grupo começa os anos 90 praticamente sem emplacar nenhum grande trabalho.
Em 1994 a musica “Jungle Boogie” foi incluída na trilha sonora do filme “Pulp Fiction”, eles lançaram um DVD em 2002 gravado no “House of Blues”, em “Chicago” também lançado no Brasil.
Em 2007 a banda se reuniu e lançou o disco chamado “Still Kool”. Já em 2013 lançaram "Kool For The Holidays" com temas natalinos e por fim em 2021, "Perfect Union", último trabalho com músicas inéditas.
